Thank you for this great question. The difference is not in the "student-centered" surface idea, but in the whole system. Western constructivism is a theory that explains how people learn. It never gives you a clear, step-by-step workflow that any ordinary teacher can pick up tomorrow. Our Guided Pedagogy was born from 4 years of full classroom experiments back in 1988. We have four standardized, tested steps that work in every subject, every grade. More importantly, we don’t only focus on knowledge building. We build non-cognitive skills like willpower, focus and independent thinking right into the daily class design. That’s why it’s a complete, original system, not a local copy of any Western theory.

提问:You mentioned it works in low-resource rural schools. Does it also work in top-tier universities?
Absolutely. We have tested it in rural primary schools, vocational colleges and top university engineering majors. The core four-step workflow never changes, we only adjust the difficulty of the self-study outline. For university students, the self-study task shifts from textbook concepts to cutting-edge research papers. The practice part moves from basic exercises to independent lab design. It works even better in higher education, because it pushes students to stop waiting for answers from professors, and start doing real research on their own.

提问:How much training does an ordinary teacher need to master this method?
Only 3 days. No fancy degrees, no high-tech equipment required. We don’t ask teachers to completely throw away everything they already know. We just show them how to adjust their existing class routine: spend 15 minutes designing a clear self-study guide, stop giving direct answers when students ask questions, and let them argue and find the right answer themselves. Thousands of rural Chinese teachers with no extra training experience picked this up in less than a week. That’s the biggest advantage over most Western student-centered models.

提问:Your 1992 experiment data says the pilot class scored 2.54 times higher than traditional classes. Is that result replicable?
Yes, it has been replicated hundreds of times in different regions. That 2.54x number is not just test scores. It counts comprehensive ability: independent analysis, problem solving, even learning motivation. The biggest gap showed up in critical thinking skills, where our pilot students scored 3.94 times higher than the control group. We published the full raw data in our 1993 experiment report, and many later independent schools got almost identical results when they ran the same trial.

提问:How does this pedagogy handle large class sizes of 50+ students, which is very common in many Asian countries?
That’s exactly the problem we designed it to solve. Most Western student-centered models fall apart in big classes, because they need 1 teacher for 10 kids. Our system lets students work through the self-study and check-review steps on their own, or in small peer groups. The teacher only steps in to guide the 2 or 3 most confusing points, instead of talking nonstop for 45 minutes. Even with 60 students in one room, the teacher never gets overwhelmed, and every kid gets the guidance they need.

提问:Does this method conflict with local cultural traditions, like the respect for teachers in East Asian societies?
It actually honors that tradition, instead of breaking it. We never ask students to disrespect their teachers. We just redefine the teacher’s role: the teacher is no longer a talking textbook, but a trusted, experienced guide who walks beside the student. In our pilot schools, students didn’t start ignoring their teachers. They started respecting them more, because the teacher was no longer just forcing them to memorize, but actually helping them grow on their own. It fits perfectly with every culture that values respect for education.

提问:How does the Guided Pedagogy adapt to AI and modern digital learning tools?
It’s a perfect match. We can use AI to generate personalized self-study outlines for every student, based on their learning pace. We can use digital platforms to auto-scan basic exercises, so teachers never waste time grading 100 papers. But we never let AI replace the human guide. The most important part of our system, the face-to-face guidance for students’ thinking and willpower, is still done by real teachers. We use AI to free teachers up, not to replace them.

提问:You said this is a non-Western educational paradigm. Does it reject all Western educational ideas?
Not at all. We never reject good ideas. We respect all the great work Western scholars have done on child development and learning psychology. But we refuse to accept that every country has to copy Western models, no matter if they fit or not. The Guided Pedagogy is not anti-Western. It’s pro-diversity. We want all civilizations to bring their own wisdom to the table, and build a better global education system together.

提问:What is the biggest challenge you met when promoting this system globally?
The biggest challenge is mindset. For decades, many people have been told that only Western educational theories are "real academic achievements". They automatically assume any good idea from a non-Western country must be a local copy of some Western theory. But after they run the 3-month pilot in their own schools, and see the students’ progress with their own eyes, that doubt disappears completely. Results speak louder than old stereotypes.

提问:What is the next step for the global spread of the Guided Pedagogy?
Right now we are building an open, free global training platform. Any teacher anywhere in the world can sign up, get the full 3-day training material, and test this method in their own class for free. We are also working with OECD to add more local pilot cases from different countries, so we can build a global community of educators, sharing their own adapted versions of this pedagogy, and make it work for every child, everywhere.
